Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)

Communication is the act or process of exchanging information between individuals using a common system of signs, symbols, or behaviour. However, it is so much more than that. We use many ways to communicate for a variety of different purposes, especially to establish and maintain social connectedness with others.

People with speech, language or cognitive challenges often have difficulty understanding others and expressing themselves during everyday communication such as speech, written word and social media such as texting, and the Internet. When supporting developing communication needs there are many things to consider. One of the things to consider for individuals with communication challenges is whether they would benefit from Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC).
